Advantage+ creative enhancements are individual features that let Meta modify your ad at delivery time and test the modified version against your original, keeping whichever performs better. They fall into two groups that deserve very different treatment: fitting enhancements, which adapt an asset you approved to placements you did not upload for, and generating enhancements, which produce new visual or audio material. The fitting ones are usually safe to leave on. The generating ones should be previewed before a campaign spends anything, because they change what your brand looks like rather than where it appears.

That distinction is the whole decision, and almost no guide draws it, mostly because the interface does not. Below is the full list with the field name Meta uses for each in its Marketing API, which is the least ambiguous way to identify them, since the labels in Ads Manager have changed more than once.

What happened to Standard Enhancements

If you remember one on-off switch, you are remembering a setting that no longer exists. Advantage+ creative originally shipped as Standard Enhancements, a single bundle. Meta deprecated that bundle on January 21, 2025 in Marketing API v22.0: advertisers could no longer create or update ads with it, though campaigns already running on it kept running.

The bundle did not disappear so much as unpack. For single image ads it became four separate options: add overlays (image_template), visual touch-ups (image_touchups), text improvements (text_optimizations), and relevant comments (inline_comment). For single video ads it became visual touch-ups (video_auto_crop), text improvements, and relevant comments. Nothing was renamed. The delivery mechanism changed from one bundled choice to individual selection, and the list has grown since.

This is why older advice, including advice that reads as recent, tells you to "turn on Advantage+ creative" as if it were a single decision. It is not one decision anymore. It is more than twenty of them, and the defaults on new sales, leads, and app promotion campaigns lean toward on.

Meta requires the features that generate new material to be created in a paused state so you can preview samples before anything runs. That preview step is the most useful safeguard in the whole system and it is the one most advertisers skip.

Should I use Advantage+ creative?

Yes for the fitting and text enhancements, and only after a preview for the generating ones. The fitting group takes an asset you already approved and makes it eligible in more places, which costs you nothing except some compositional control at the edges. The text group reshuffles copy you wrote, so the worst case is a headline sitting in the description slot. The generating group is different in kind: it produces pixels, animation, or audio you never saw, attached to your brand, running against your budget.

The other half of the answer is that this is not really a standalone choice. Advantage+ campaigns require no placement targeting and no placement exclusions at all, so every ad is eligible across Facebook feed, Instagram feed, Stories, Reels, Marketplace, Search, and Audience Network at once. If you upload one square image into that, something has to fill a 9:16 frame, and the enhancements are what does it. Turning them all off does not restore control, it just leaves the crop to a blunter mechanism.

Which Advantage+ enhancements should you turn off?

Four are worth a hard look before they run.

image_background_gen replaces the environment around your product. On a plain packshot it can be an improvement. On anything where context carries meaning, a product in use, a room, a garment on a person, it invents a setting that may contradict what you sell.

image_animation turns a still into a short video. That moves your ad into a different format with different pacing expectations, built from a frame that was composed to be read rather than watched.

image_templates adds overlays on top of your creative. If your image already carries typography, this is how you end up with two competing text layers.

creative_stickers adds AI-generated stickers. Fine for a casual consumer brand, corrosive for anything selling on credibility, which covers most B2B, financial, medical, and professional services advertising.

Beyond those, judge by whether the feature touches brand-critical elements. Regulated advertisers usually want image_text_translation and translate_voiceover off as well, because a machine-translated claim is still a claim you are legally responsible for.

What does Advantage+ creative do to my images?

It adapts them to placements you did not upload for. The documented behaviors are specific: fit the image to whichever placement is predicted to work best, expand it outward to fill available space, crop and expand it to reach more placements, and show media built for one aspect ratio across all of them. Each of those is a model making a compositional decision about your product without access to your brand guidelines.

There is a clean way to opt out of the whole question, and it is not a toggle. Supply a native asset for every ratio. If a real 9:16 composition already exists in the asset feed, there is nothing for image_uncrop to invent. The enhancements exist because most advertisers upload one or two ratios, not because Meta prefers generated edges. Filling the ratios is the fix that keeps both the reach and the control.

Is Advantage+ creative good?

It raises the floor and does nothing for the ceiling. Handing crop, placement fit, and copy arrangement to a model removes a class of avoidable errors, which is why smaller advertisers often see an immediate lift. What it cannot do is invent an argument for your product. The system optimizes across the material you supply, so two advertisers running identical settings against the same audience with the same budget get different outcomes entirely because of what is in the asset pool.

That is the part worth internalizing. Enhancements are a delivery-time optimizer sitting on top of your creative, and the range of results available to them is bounded by the range of creative in the account. Three near-identical ads leave almost nothing to optimize between, regardless of how many enhancements are enabled.

How to preview enhancements before they spend

Create the ad, leave it paused, and open the preview. Meta supports previews for the features most likely to surprise you, including image_templates, image_touchups, video_auto_crop, enhance_cta, text_optimizations, image_background_gen, image_uncrop, description_automation, translate_voiceover, image_animation, video_filtering, and video_uncrop. Look at the generated variants across placements rather than the feed preview alone, since the crops are the point.

Then check the destination as carefully as the creative. An Advantage+ campaign keeps allocating budget on its own schedule, which is a real advantage right up until the page on the other end breaks, at which point automation happily keeps buying clicks into an error page for as long as it takes someone to notice. If your landing pages are not already covered by something that checks them every thirty seconds and pages you when they go down, add that before you scale spend, not after.

What this means for how you produce creative

Two things follow. First, ratio coverage moved from a nice-to-have to the main defense against generated adaptation, so a set that exists natively at 4:5, 1:1, and 9:16 gives the enhancements far less to do. Second, pool depth matters more than enhancement configuration, because the optimizer can only choose among what you gave it.

Both are production problems, and both are why per-asset pricing sits awkwardly against this system: the behavior it rewards is producing many distinct concepts, killing most of them, and refreshing on a cadence, and a credit meter charges for each step. Adscreator takes a product or landing page URL and returns a full Advantage+ ad set, on-brand images composed natively at every placement ratio plus the copy that runs with them, on flat pricing rather than credits. Google runs a near-identical play under other names, covered in Performance Max asset specs and the Demand Gen ad maker. For how wide a pool should be, how many ad variations to test works through the math, and social media ad sizes lists every crop you need to fill.

Frequently asked questions

What are Advantage+ creative enhancements?

They are individual features that let Meta modify your ad at delivery time and test the modified version against the original, showing whichever performs better. They cover fitting an image to more placements, adjusting brightness, generating backgrounds or animation, rearranging your text options, translating copy, and surfacing a relevant comment under the ad.

Are Advantage+ creative enhancements on by default?

On new sales, leads, and app promotion campaigns the defaults lean toward on, and each enhancement is opted out individually rather than through one switch. The bundled Standard Enhancements setting that used to control them together was deprecated on January 21, 2025, so any guide describing a single toggle is out of date.

How do I turn off Advantage+ creative?

Open the ad level in Ads Manager and toggle the enhancements off one by one. There is no master switch. For the features that generate new material, preview the samples first rather than deciding from the feature name, since some of them are far more conservative than they sound and others are far less.

Do Advantage+ creative enhancements actually improve performance?

The fitting and text enhancements usually help, because they widen where an approved asset can run and cost nothing but some control at the edges. The generating enhancements are genuinely mixed and depend on your category: a plain packshot often benefits from a generated background, while anything where context carries meaning often does not.

Can you exclude placements in an Advantage+ campaign?

No. A campaign only qualifies as Advantage+ if it applies no placement targeting and no exclusions, so every placement across Meta's network stays eligible. That requirement is the reason creative for these campaigns has to cover every aspect ratio rather than assuming a feed-only run.

How many creatives should an Advantage+ ad set have?

Meta enforces no minimum, which is the trap. Running 8 to 15 genuinely different concepts in one ad set, each present at every placement ratio, gives the model a real range to optimize within. Five recolors of one idea is one concept, not five, and the system will treat it that way.
