Google Hotel Ads cost what you bid per click in 2026, because Google retired the commission per stay and commission per conversion bid strategies for hotel campaigns, and free booking links in the same module cost nothing. Google stopped offering commission bidding to new campaigns on April 30, 2024, and campaigns that still used it stopped serving in early 2025. What a click costs depends on your market and your bid, but travel is cheap by search standards: LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the Travel category at $2.14 per click and $44.70 per lead, against an all-industry average of $5.42 per click. The number an independent hotel should manage is cost per direct booking, set against what the same booking would cost through an online travel agency.

Plenty of hotel guides still describe a 10 to 15 percent commission charged only after the guest checks out. That model is gone. Below is what replaced it, what each figure rests on, how to turn a click price into a cost per booking, and how to size a first monthly budget.

How much do Google Hotel Ads cost?

Three options are live in 2026: free booking links, which cost nothing, and two ways to bid per click in a hotel campaign. The two commission options at the bottom of the table are retired.

OptionWhat you payWhat you needStatus in 2026
Free booking linksNothing. Google charges no cost for clicks on free booking linksYour property and rates in Hotel Center, usually through a booking engine or channel managerAvailable

Commission per stayA share of the booking value, billed after checkoutSelect partners, reconciliation uploadsRetired

So the honest answer to how much Google Hotel Ads cost is the sum of your clicks. You set the campaign budget and the bids, and you can stop at any time. There is no setup fee from Google, though your booking engine or connectivity partner may charge for the Hotel Center connection or bid management.

Is Google Hotel Ads commission based?

No, not anymore. Google's reason, as reported when it announced the change, was that its travel commission products depended on third-party cookies and stay-specific information to confirm when a guest had actually stayed. The timeline went like this: no new allowlist requests for commission per stay from February 2024, both commission strategies removed from the bid strategy menu on April 30, 2024, and serving for existing campaigns extended past the original October 31, 2024 deadline into February 2025. Google pointed advertisers toward target return on ad spend for hotel campaigns and toward Performance Max for travel goals.

If a vendor or an old guide quotes you a commission rate for Google Hotel Ads, ask what they mean. They may be describing their own fee, or a metasearch channel other than Google.

What does a travel click cost on Google?

No public benchmark with a published method covers hotel ads in the booking module on their own. The largest public set of search figures, LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks, reports a Travel category that is the closest neighbor. Use it as a range to test against, not a quote.

LocaliQ 2026 categoryCost per clickClick-through rateCost per leadConversion rate
Travel$2.149.32%$44.705.83%
Arts and Entertainment$1.6312.75%$26.845.91%
Restaurants and Food$2.056.83%$30.578.05%
Sports and Recreation$2.778.75%$44.267.69%
All industries$5.42not used herenot used herenot used here

Two cautions. These are search campaign averages across many kinds of travel advertisers, not hotel booking module clicks, and a "lead" in LocaliQ's data is a tracked conversion, which for a hotel would be a booking only if that is what you track. Brand searches on your own hotel name usually cost less than generic searches like hotels in a city, because few advertisers other than online travel agencies bid on them.

How do I work out cost per booking?

Cost per booking is the click price divided by the share of clicks that book. If your clicks cost $2 and 2 percent of them book, each booking costs $100 in ads. If 4 percent book, it costs $50. The figures in the table below are illustrative, so swap in your own click price and booking rate from Google Ads once you have a month of data.

Cost per clickBooking rateAd cost per bookingAs a share of a $450 stay
$1.503%$5011%
$2.002%$10022%
$2.004%$5011%
$3.003%$10022%

Now compare that share with the commission in your own online travel agency contracts for the same stay. If a direct booking costs less in ads than the agency would take, the campaign is paying for itself before you count the guest's email address, which you keep, and the next stay, which can come direct for free. If it costs more, fix the booking rate before you raise the budget: the landing page, the booking engine and the offer in the ad matter more than the bid.

Hotel campaigns or Performance Max for travel goals?

Most independent hotels end up running both, because they do different jobs.

Google says Performance Max for travel goals can suggest headlines and pull interior and exterior photos of many hotels on its own. Every competing property can get the same suggestions, so the asset groups that win usually carry the hotel's own photos and words. That is where hotel ad creation software for boutique hotel advertising earns its place: paste a room or package page and AdsCreator writes the headlines and descriptions and builds the images in every ratio in one pass. The full list of sizes and character limits is in Performance Max asset specs.

How much should a small hotel spend on Google Ads?

Work backward from the direct bookings you want, not from a round number. Pick a target, multiply by a realistic ad cost per booking, and compare the result with what the same bookings would cost in agency commission. The table uses the illustrative $50 and $100 per booking from above.

Direct bookings per month from adsAt $50 per bookingAt $100 per booking
10$500$1,000
25$1,250$2,500
50$2,500$5,000

Start with your own hotel name in a search campaign and a hotel campaign at modest bids, because those travelers already want you. Add Performance Max for travel goals once conversion tracking reports real booking values, and give it a full month before judging it, since automated bidding needs data to settle.

How to keep Google Hotel Ads costs down

  • Keep prices accurate. Hotel ads and free booking links show the rate from your feed, and Google uses price accuracy among its ranking signals. A rate that changes on the landing page costs you clicks and trust.
  • Track bookings with values. Target return on ad spend only works when conversion tracking sends the booking value with the Purchase category.
  • Bid by itinerary. Hotel campaigns let you adjust bids by length of stay, check-in day and how far ahead the traveler books. Raise bids for the dates you struggle to fill, lower them for dates that sell out anyway.
  • Exclude what never books. In search campaigns, add negatives for jobs, careers, hotel management courses and competitor brands you cannot outbid profitably.
  • Make the booking engine do its part. A slow mobile checkout wastes every click you pay for. If you are choosing systems, a property management system built for inns and B&Bs that connects rates, availability and direct bookings in one place makes accurate feeds far easier to keep.
  • Give each guest type its own ad. A weekend couple, a business traveler and a wedding guest need different headlines and different photos, which matters most in Performance Max and on Facebook and Instagram.

Are Google free booking links worth setting up?

Yes, for almost every independent hotel. Google charges nothing for clicks on free booking links, they appear in the same booking module as paid hotel ads, and Google says no one can pay for a higher position among them. Existing Hotel Center partners running hotel ads are eligible automatically if they have a bid in a hotel campaign, available rates and a landing page. If your booking engine supports a Google connection, turning it on is the cheapest direct booking channel you have.

What to do next

Connect your rates to Hotel Center through your booking engine, switch on free booking links, run a small hotel campaign on your own name, and track bookings with values. Then build the creative that Performance Max, search and social ads need. AdsCreator turns your room, package or offer page into hotel ad copy and on-brand images in every size, so each guest type gets its own ad without an agency invoice for each one. If your property also hosts weddings, the wedding venue ad maker builds the room block and tour ads, and pricing lists every plan.
