Google Ads for a towing company typically cost about $2 to $5 per click and $20 to $30 per lead in 2026, based on the few published figures that exist. An agency reporting on more than 30 towing campaigns puts the typical lead at $20 to $30 with conversion rates of 20 to 30 percent, and LocaliQ's measured sample of 2,001 US automotive repair and service campaigns averaged $4.35 per click and $29.96 per lead. Nobody publishes an independent multi account benchmark for towing alone, so treat those as a planning range and replace them with your own numbers after the first 30 days. A common starting budget is about $1,000 a month per truck.
Most pages that rank for this question give one number with no sample behind it. Below is every figure worth budgeting with and where it comes from, why towing converts so much better than most trades, what changes now that Google has retired call-only ads, what Local Services Ads ask of a towing company, and how to size a monthly budget on cost per booked tow instead of cost per click.
How much does a towing lead cost on Google Ads?
Plan on roughly $20 to $30 per lead in an average US market, with lower prices possible in dense metros where search volume is high. That is the range Web Eminence, a Google Ads agency, reports across its towing accounts in an article by Ryan Bowman dated March 12, 2024. The title says 17 accounts and a later update says the lessons come from "over 30 towing campaigns across various cities." The same article says leads under $15, and sometimes under $10, are possible in high population areas such as Miami or New York City.
LocaliQ's automotive benchmark lands in the same place from a different direction. Across 2,001 US search campaigns from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025, the auto repair, service and parts group averaged $4.35 per click and $29.96 per lead. Towing is not broken out as its own subcategory in that report, but it shares the buyer, the vehicle and the local search pattern, which makes it the closest measured reference available.
| Figure and source | Cost per click | Cost per lead | What sits behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Towing, agency summary (Web Eminence, March 2024) | Not published | $20 to $30 typical; under $15 in some metros | 17 accounts in the title, over 30 campaigns in the update |
| Towing, one Phoenix client (OMG Tow Marketing) | $2.22 | $3.69 | One company, managed since December 2019 |
| Auto repair, service and parts (LocaliQ) | $4.35 | $29.96 | 2,001 US campaigns, Oct 2024 to Sep 2025 |
| Mobile mechanic (99 Calls) | $3.93 average, 2026 | Not published | Agency managed accounts, 2026 year to date |
| All industries, search (LocaliQ) | $5.42 | $66.69 | All-industry 2026 benchmark |
The Phoenix figure needs a warning label. OMG Tow Marketing presents it as a case study for one towing company whose budget grew from $1,000 to $6,500 a month, and it says competitors in the same market were paying $15 to $20 per lead. A $3.69 lead is what one well run account reached after years of work and more than 1,800 negative keywords, not what a new account should expect in its first month.
Why towing leads cost less than most home service leads
The click itself is not unusually cheap. What makes towing different is how often a click turns into a call. Web Eminence reports conversion rates of 20 to 30 percent on towing campaigns against 5 to 10 percent on most other Google Ads accounts it runs. The reason is simple: the person searching "tow truck near me" is standing next to a car that will not move. They are not collecting three quotes for next month. They call one of the first numbers they see.
Cost per lead is cost per click divided by conversion rate, so that behavior matters more than the bid. At LocaliQ's $4.35 automotive click and a 20 to 30 percent call rate, a lead works out to about $14.50 to $21.75. At a $5 click and a 20 percent call rate it is $25. Compare that with trades where the buyer shops around: 99 Calls' 2026 data puts the median search lead for roofing at $285 and for electricians at $168. Towing sits at the cheap end of local service advertising because its buyer is the most urgent one.
What pushes a towing account above $30 a lead
- Missed calls. Google charges for the click whether or not anyone picks up. A towing account that sends night calls to voicemail pays full price for leads that call the next company on the list. If you cannot staff the phone around the clock, an AI receptionist that answers calls around the clock can take the details and dispatch, but the fix has to exist before you raise the budget.
- A service area drawn too wide. A driver 40 minutes away will not wait for your truck. Target by radius or by the cities you can reach in your promised time, and exclude the rest.
- Loose keywords. Searches for towing jobs, towing capacity, tow hitches, truck rentals and how much a car can tow all look like towing to a broad match campaign. The Phoenix case study credits more than 1,800 negative keywords for its low price, which tells you how much of the raw traffic is waste.
- One ad for every job. A lockout, a highway tow and a heavy duty recovery are three different searches. One generic ad earns a lower quality rating on all of them, which raises the price of every click.
Call-only ads are going away: what that changes for towing
This is the change most towing owners have not caught up with yet. On October 3, 2025, Google announced that call ads, the call-only format that towing accounts have leaned on for years, are being deprecated. Since February 2026 no new call-only ad can be created, and in February 2027 all existing call-only ads stop receiving impressions. Google's replacement is a responsive search ad with a call asset, which still puts a call button in front of mobile searchers.
The cost side of that change is not the bid. It is the copy. A call-only ad needed two short lines. A responsive search ad takes up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and up to 4 descriptions of 90 characters, and Google assembles the ad from them. Accounts that paste in two headlines get a weak ad strength rating and show less often, which quietly raises the effective cost per lead. Write separate headlines for response time, the cities you cover, flatbed and wheel lift, roadside help, heavy duty, hours and payment, so the system has real combinations to test. That is the job our towing company advertising tool does: paste your service page and it writes the headlines and descriptions for each job, along with the matching Facebook, Instagram and display creative.
Do Local Services Ads cost less for towing?
Local Services Ads charge per lead instead of per click, and towing is one of the listed US categories, described by Google as a professional who "offers auto towing and roadside assistance." Google does not publish lead prices, and 99 Calls' Local Services Ads cost estimator, which covers 25 trades, has no towing row, so there is no public price to quote. What is public is the screening list, and for towing it is long:
- Business and owner background checks, and a business representative check, for select users.
- General liability, professional liability and cargo liability insurance, plus on-hook limit insurance.
- Garage keepers liability and on-hook insurance where local law requires them.
- State business and owner licenses where applicable.
Google says screening takes three to four weeks on average. Towing was not named in the first group of trades Google began moving from Local Services Ads into Performance Max in 2026, although Google's own list is introduced with "including," so it may not be complete. Either way, a Local Services Ad carries no custom headline or image. It runs next to search ads, not instead of them.
How to set a monthly Google Ads budget for a towing company
Size the budget per truck, then check it against your own lead price. Web Eminence's rule of thumb is that about $1,000 a month per truck keeps a truck busy, and that a daily budget should be at least five to ten times your average cost per lead to get enough volume to learn from. Their own example started a client at $26 a day and noted it produced leads but was too small to scale.
| Trucks on cash calls | Monthly budget | Leads at $25 | Leads at $15 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $1,000 | 40 | 67 |
| 2 | $2,000 | 80 | 133 |
| 3 | $3,000 | 120 | 200 |
| 5 | $5,000 | 200 | 333 |
Two things keep those numbers honest. First, Google may spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, and bills no more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month, so a $50 daily budget can spend $100 on a stormy Friday. Second, a lead is a call, not a tow. Track how many calls become paid jobs, and judge the account on cost per booked tow. If one call in two becomes a $150 tow, a $25 lead costs you $50 per job, which is easy to justify. If half your calls are price shoppers who never book, the same lead price costs twice as much per job.
Where towing ad money goes furthest
Spend first on the job with the highest margin and the most urgent buyer, which for most companies is light duty cash towing in the core service area. Give roadside assistance its own ad group, because lockouts and jump starts are fast, cheap jobs that fill gaps between tows. Keep heavy duty recovery separate with its own budget, since its clicks are rarer and its jobs are worth many times more. Account work for dealers, repair shops and fleets belongs mostly on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, where you can reach owners during office hours, and it often costs less per contract than any search lead. The auto repair shop advertising page covers the shop side of that relationship, and what Google Ads cost for auto repair shops shows the repair lead prices your referral partners are paying.
For the form side, lead generation ads covers instant forms for planned work such as long distance transport, where the buyer is happy to leave details and wait for a quote.
